Baa Baa Black Sheep

22 May

Bronwyn loves sheep.  And so, therefore, does Holly.  So when Bruce’s coworker invited us to her sheep farm after work one day, we decided to accept.  There were two orphan lambs about three weeks old each that needed to be fed by bottle, and that were sort of ostracized from the herd.  We started with those.  Brownyn was able to feed her lamb its bottle by herself, but Holly needed a bit of help.  Those lambs are surprisingly strong!  And they really did follow us around wherever we went.  I was just warning Bronwyn not to let her fingers get to close to the lamb’s mouth when I look over to see Holly with her arm up to the elbow inside the other one’s mouth, and the other hand poking it in the eye.  I am clearly worried about the wrong daughter.  The sheep didn’t seem to mind, and was content to stand there suffering the abuse until we noticed and pulled her away.

We also got a tour of the whole operation, and learned more than I ever thought I would need to know about raising sheep.  Very interesting.  The girls amused themselves by chasing the babies around the enclosure (the mamas didn’t seem to mind), and coming up with names for the new lambs.  Alana promised us that we could name one, and Bronwyn and Bruce came up with “Ten” because the lamb in question had perfect markings.  I don’t know who had more fun…
